KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya Ferry Disaster: Severe Weather and Engine Trouble Leave Dozens Missing
Bali Strait, 2 July 2025 — A tragic ferry accident occurred late on Wednesday, 2 July, when the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, carrying 65 people and 22 vehicles, sank in the Bali Strait shortly after departing Ketapang port in East Java for Gilimanuk, Bali. The incident claimed at least four lives, with around 30 people still missing, although rescue operations are actively underway.

Rescue crews have already saved 31 survivors, many of whom were found unconscious after drifting for hours in rough seas. The ferry sank about 25–30 minutes after departure, likely due to severe weather and engine problems.
The vessel was operated by a private company and was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles—14 of which were trucks.
Strong waves—including swells up to 2.5 meters—and intensifying winds, coupled with engine issues, hampered rescue operations. A fleet of rescue vessels, including tugboats, inflatable boats, and a helicopter, joined the search effort.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, currently in Saudi Arabia, issued orders for an immediate and comprehensive emergency response. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the precise cause of the accident.
