Bernard Nsengiyumva, one of Rwanda’s pioneering cyclists and a historic figure in the sport, has passed away at the age of 73 after a battle with illness. The sad news was confirmed on the morning of Monday, July 7, 2025.

Born in 1952 in Kibangu Sector, Muhanga District, Nsengiyumva began his cycling career at the age of 27. In a past interview with InyaRwanda, he recalled buying his first bicycle for 1,000 Rwandan Francs—a modest beginning that would lead to a legendary career.

Nsengiyumva was among the riders who competed in the very first edition of the Tour du Rwanda around 1988. However, it wasn’t until 2001, at the age of 49, that he claimed victory in the race, just before it gained international status.

Known for his endurance and late-career triumph, Bernard earned admiration across generations of cyclists and fans, who often referred to him as the “King of Tour du Rwanda” for his inspiring journey and impact on the sport.

He will be laid to rest on Monday in his hometown of Muhanga.

May his soul rest in peace.
