On the morning of Thursday, May 8, 2025, the world witnessed a historic election at the Vatican, where Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost from the United States was elected as the new Pope of the Catholic Church.

This marks the first time in over 2,000 years of Catholic history that an American has been elected Pope. He immediately took the name Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement was made by the head of the College of Cardinals after the appearance of white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel, a sign that a new Pope had been chosen. In his first public address broadcasted on television and international media, Pope Leo XIV emphasized his commitment to continuing the legacy of the Church while advocating for constructive changes, Christian unity, and promoting peace and justice.
Profile of Robert Francis Prevost

Robert Prevost was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1955. He studied at Villanova University and also received theological education at religious institutions in Rome. He entered the Order of Saint Augustine in the 1980s and was sent on missions to South America, especially in Peru, where he became known for his dedication to the poor and marginalized.
He served as the global leader of the Augustinian Order from 2001 to 2013 and later became the Archbishop of Chiclayo in Peru. In 2023, Pope Francis made him a Cardinal and entrusted him with significant responsibilities in the Vatican, particularly overseeing the conduct of bishops worldwide.
His Election as Pope
The election was attended by 133 cardinals from different countries. Prevost was chosen after two days of discussions and voting, based on his insight and expertise in Church leadership. The election was carried out peacefully and respectfully, giving hope to millions of the faithful.
He chose the name Pope Leo XIV, inspired by the legacy of Popes named Leo, particularly Pope Leo XIII, who was known for promoting justice and workers’ rights in the 19th century.
Pope Leo XIV’s Vision and Agenda

In his first address, Pope Leo XIV outlined his plans based on three key pillars:
- Continuing the Christian mission and evangelism in the modern world: He emphasized spreading the Gospel, especially in neglected regions, and areas where faith is fading, leveraging technology and collaboration to achieve this.
- Fostering unity and reconciliation within the Church: Pope Leo XIV expressed his desire to work toward Church unity with other Christian denominations, focusing on reconciliation and rejecting division. He plans to promote good relations between the Church and other Christian communities, as well as healing relations between nations with difficult historical backgrounds.
- Advocating for justice, peace, and the environment: He plans to launch new initiatives to protect the environment, combat extreme poverty, and promote peace and human rights. He highlighted that the Church should be the voice for the voiceless, particularly those suffering from war and poverty.
Message to the Faithful

Pope Leo XIV called on all Christians to continue in prayer, love, and unity. He stressed that this mission would not be accomplished alone, but rather through the collective effort of the larger Church family. He also announced a focus on the youth, encouraging them to boldly proclaim the Gospel and be a reflection of love in the world.
A New Hope

The election of Pope Leo XIV is seen as a new chapter in the history of the Catholic Church. It signals that the Vatican is becoming more open, welcoming leaders from different parts of the world. As an American with experience and dedication, many believe that he will lead the Church in a way that helps it remain a beacon of light in these times of significant change.
